BLUESIGN Aligns PFAS Restrictions with Tightening Global Regulations in Major Standard Update

In response to an increasingly complex patchwork of international environmental laws and state-level bans, textile sustainability organization BLUESIGN has released its 2026 chemical reference lists. The updated standards feature stricter limits on per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), clearer testing guidance, and new frameworks designed to help brands navigate global supply chain compliance.

The revised editions of the bluesign System Black Limits (BSBL v8.0), bluesign System Substances List (BSSL v17.0), and bluesign Restricted Substances List (RSL v17.0) took effect on July 1, 2026. Chemical suppliers must meet the updated formulation thresholds by July 1, 2027, while finished product specifications for brands and retailers become mandatory by July 1, 2028.

Key Technical Updates in the 2026 Standards

While BLUESIGN maintains its overarching 50 mg/kg total-fluorine threshold for waterproof performance polymers, the 2026 update introduces far more granular controls to eliminate intentionally added PFAS and trace contamination:

• Substance-Group Limits: Non-polymer PFAS compounds and PFAS-based dyes now carry a strict 250 μg/kg (250 ppb) group limit, along with an individual substance limit of 25 μg/kg (25 ppb).

• Distinguishing Non-PFAS Dyestuffs: As laboratories adopt broader fluorine-screening techniques, BLUESIGN added a new classification section that distinguishes fluorinated non-PFAS dyestuffs from harmful PFAS compounds, preventing false-positive compliance flags.

• Updated Testing Protocols: Recommended total-fluorine testing now incorporates EN ISO 20999:2026, ASTM D7359, and EN 17813:2023 methodologies to ensure consistent analytical accuracy across global supply chains.

• Beyond Forever Chemicals: The 2026 lists also introduce new restrictions on flame retardants (including Dechlorane Plus), colorants like Malachite Green, and stricter limits on heavy metals, biocides, and isocyanates.

Industry Impact

The alignment follows BLUESIGN's complete internal PFAS phase-out, which removed all intentionally added PFAS from its bluesign APPROVED materials database in early 2026.
