Snow's Falling At Mt Buller

It’s SNOWING on the mountain with just 54 days to the season start in June!

The lowdown:

  • Snow started to settle early this morning and is continuing to fall

  • The temperature is hovering around -1C and the feels like temperature is more like -10 with a fresh WSW breeze

  • Between 1-5cms has accumulated across the resort this morning

  • Mt Buller kicks off the 2026 snow season on the King’s Birthday long weekend in just 54 days

  • All Mt Buller snow season is on sale now including accommodation, lift passes, lessons and rental

  • Adults can ski Mt Buller this season from $121 p/d and kids up to 18 from $73

An unseasonably early flurry of snow has settled on Victoria's largest ski resort this weekend, offering a welcome preview of winter for eager ski fans.

Early April snowfall at Mt Buller is an exceptionally uncommon event, occurring on average just once every seven years at this time of year. The weekend's flurry, light as it was, places this Easter among that select company.

Resort spokesperson Rhylla Morgan said

"It was a lovely surprise to open the curtains to fresh snow and there are very excited children, and adults acting like children, playing all around the village this morning. The resort is counting down to opening weekend and the anticipation is building for the winter season just 54 days away These early snowfalls are always welcome as they start to cool the ground ready to hold the real winter falls to come – and it’s a reminder winter holidays are just around the corner, so it’s a good time to start booking in

"If you are visiting us today, take it easy on the road which may be slippery in places. Dress for winter conditions as it is chilly – and be sure to stop into Arlberg and the pub for a hot chocolate while you are here!"

Historically, temperatures in the first week of April at Mt Buller's mid-altitude of 1,590 metres sit well above freezing, with averages of around 9.5°C during the day — conditions far more likely to produce rain than snow. That makes Sunday's white coating all the more striking, and all the more appreciated by the resort's growing community of winter enthusiasts.

The snowfall comes as Mt Buller is busy with its Easter green-season programme. The mountain's RockWire climb and Northside Express chairlift have been operating through the long weekend, with Woody's Café open through to today, Sunday 12 April. For visitors on the mountain this weekend, the surprise snowfall provided an unexpected bonus.

The 2026 ski season at Mt Buller is scheduled to open on 6 June with the resort's traditional King's Birthday long weekend launch the focal point of the Victorian ski calendar. With snowmaking operations likely to begin in the weeks ahead, any natural snowfall — however modest — gives the mountain a welcome head start.

The snowiest period of year at Mt Buller typically arrives in early August, when the mountain can expect around 22 centimetres of fresh snow across roughly three and a half snowy days in a single week. Today's dusting is a far cry from those midwinter heights, but for those watching the mountain closely, it is exactly the kind of early-season signal that gets pulses racing.

The resort is encouraging those planning a winter trip to lock in their accommodation and lift passes early ahead of what promises to be a busy season. Whether today's snow is a sign of things to come, only the coming weeks will tell — but on the mountain this Easter Sunday, winter felt a little less far away.
