Purgatory Resort Announces New Leadership Structure; Dave Rathbun Named CEO of Purgatory Holdings
15/April/2026
Purgatory Resort has announced a significant reorganization of its executive team, aimed at streamlining operations and accelerating long-term growth. Leading the shift, longtime General Manager Dave Rathbun has been appointed Chief Executive Officer of Purgatory Resort Holdings, the entity overseeing the resort’s various affiliated businesses under the Mountain Capital Partners (MCP) umbrella.
The restructuring also introduces two key senior director roles to manage day-to-day mountain and village activities.
In his new capacity as CEO, Rathbun will step away from daily granular management to focus on high-level strategic planning and the execution of major capital projects. Priority initiatives under his watch include the installation of the new Gelande lift and essential snowmaking upgrades along the Divinity Trail.
“As Purgatory continues to grow, it has become clear that we need to spend more time looking ahead, not just at what’s right in front of us,” Rathbun stated. “This shift gives me the ability to focus on the bigger-picture work that will help guide the resort’s next phase of growth and development.”
Strengthening Resort Operations
Josh Benson has been promoted to Senior Director of Resort Operations, where he will oversee mountain operations, guest services, food and beverage, and administrative functions.
Benson is a familiar face within the MCP family, having served as the base area manager at nearby Hesperus Ski Area during the 2017-18 season before moving into Purgatory’s guest services department two years ago. Rathbun credited Benson as the "engine" behind recent improvements in the resort's retail and rental sectors.
“Josh has been an integral part of our team and our culture,” Rathbun added. “His understanding of our guests and staff makes him exceptionally well-suited to lead the resort’s day-to-day operations.”
Rounding out the leadership trio is Michael Rosenfeld, who steps into the role of Senior Director of Village Operations. Rosenfeld has served as Purgatory’s Director of Hospitality and Executive Director of the Durango Mountain Master Association since 2021.
With a deep resume featuring leadership roles at Telluride Ski and Golf and Copper Mountain, Rosenfeld will now manage:
Homeowner Association (HOA) management
Community services and lodging
Real estate operations and development
Maintenance and engineering
The restructuring signals Purgatory’s commitment to evolving its infrastructure alongside its increasing popularity. By separating the strategic oversight of the holdings company from the immediate operational needs of the mountain and village, the resort aims to enhance both the guest experience and its long-term viability in the competitive Colorado ski market.
“I’m honored to take on this expanded role,” said Benson. “Purgatory is a special place, and I look forward to building on the strong foundation we have in place.”
