Ponte di Legno Tonale ski area: Modern cable car planned

Ponte di Legno Tonale ski area: has a new, mModern cable car planned. An investment of 22 million euros is redesigning access, connections and hospitality in the heart of the ski resort.

In the summer of 2026, the heart of the Ponte di Legno ski area – a Lombardy ski resort that was among the first in the Alps to embrace and promote skiing at the beginning of the 20th century – will be completely transformed.

The Corno d'Aola chairlift, built by Leitner in the late 1980s and thus in operation for almost 40 years, will be dismantled and replaced by a modern gondola lift. The Angelo ski lift, which takes skiers up to an altitude of 2,100 meters, will also be removed. The new gondola lift, which will have a mid-station near the Petit Pierre mountain hut, will replace both lifts. Additional accommodation will also be built near the mountain station.

In early January 2026, the relevant permitting committee gave the green light to the project commissioned by SIT (Società Impianti Turistici). Construction is scheduled to begin in spring 2026 so that the lift will be completed in time for the 2025/2026 ski season. The project is estimated to cost around €22 million. The new lift will start in Valbione at an altitude of 1,500 meters, have an intermediate station at 1,925 meters, and extend up to 2,100 meters.

Particular importance is attached to the architecture of the stations, which are designed as light wooden structures with forms reminiscent of traditional local building methods.

“ This ski resort has made great strides over the last two decades – first by connecting the high-altitude ski area (Tonale) with the lower-altitude area (Ponte di Legno and Temù) via lifts, then by optimizing the connections to the glacier. Now, another important step is being taken for a resort that has managed to become one of the most popular in our Alps and secure its success through continuous investment ,” commented Valeria Ghezzi, President of ANEF (Italian Cable Car Association).
