Outdoor Research Announces Departure of President Roger Barton

Outdoor Research (OR), the Pacific Northwest-based leader in technical apparel and outdoor gear, announced today that Roger Barton will be stepping down as President. Barton’s departure marks the end of an eight-year chapter with the company, during which he guided the brand through a period of significant industry shifts and internal growth.

Barton joined Outdoor Research in 2018, initially serving in a dual capacity leading finance and operations. His strategic oversight quickly became a cornerstone of the company’s internal structure, leading to his appointment as President in 2020.

During his leadership, Barton was credited with modernizing the brand’s operational framework while maintaining its reputation for technical innovation and rugged durability.

A Legacy of Stewardship

The announcement included high praise from the company’s leadership, emphasizing Barton’s role in navigating the brand through a "pivotal moment" in its history—likely a reference to the global supply chain challenges and the outdoor industry boom of the early 2020s.

“Roger came to Outdoor Research at a pivotal moment and helped shape the brand into what it is today, instilling not only operational excellence but also serving as a strong steward of the brand,” said Michelle Wardian, a member of the Outdoor Research board of directors.

Wardian further highlighted the personal impact Barton had on the Seattle-based team, noting: “His leadership, integrity, and genuine care for this team leave a lasting impression on our culture and our company. We are grateful for everything he has contributed and wish him well in what comes next.”

What’s Next for OR?

The company has not yet named a direct successor for the role of President. As the brand moves forward, it remains anchored in its Seattle headquarters, continuing to produce gear for alpinism, climbing, and backcountry skiing.

Barton’s next move has not been publicly disclosed, but his exit marks a significant transition for the brand as it enters its next phase of evolution in the competitive outdoor market.

Founded in 1981, Outdoor Research is dedicated to providing "Tested, Trusted" gear for the outdoors. Based in Seattle, Washington, the company is a recognized leader in technical apparel, gloves, and headwear for high-altitude climbing and mountain sports.
