New Latemar cable car opens: Investment of 15.5 million
02/April/2026
An investment of €15.5 million, 42 cabins, a transport capacity of 2,700 people per hour, a route length of 1,085 meters, and a travel time of approximately 4 minutes. These are the figures for the new "Latemar" cable car, which connects the valley station at 1,760 meters with the mountain station at 2,015 meters, overcoming a difference in altitude of 255 meters.
The new infrastructure was recently inaugurated in a ceremony attended by authorities, industry representatives, and local residents. The lift, built by Doppelmayr, has been operational since the start of the 2025-2026 winter season. It replaces the previous four-person chairlift, which had been in operation since 1988. The new lift represents a significant leap forward in terms of comfort, accessibility, and transport capacity.
The inauguration also provided an opportunity to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the ski connection between Obereggen, Pampeago and Predazzo – a strategically important infrastructure that has contributed over time to the touristic and economic development of the entire region.
“This is an important inauguration for a facility that already began operating in the 2025-2026 winter season, but given the significance of the investment for the valley and the entire region, it deserves an official ceremony,” explained Achille Spinelli, Vice President of the Autonomous Province of Trento. “We are talking about a major private investment, initiated by a company that operates a large, diverse, and high-quality ski resort and has a strong appeal. Our goal,” Spinelli continued, “is to support and facilitate such initiatives, which also have positive effects on other sectors, attract high-quality tourism, and contribute to the vibrancy of the area. After a period like the Olympic and Paralympic Games, which gave Trentino exceptional international visibility, we now expect significant follow-up effects.”
ITAP (Incremento Turistico Alpe di Pampeago), which operates the facilities on site, has thus confirmed its status as a dynamic organization that continuously invests and enhances the ski area as envisioned by the spatial planning. The ski resorts of Val di Fiemme also serve as a model for cooperation within the Dolomiti Superski system and contribute over 10% of the winter use of cable cars in Trentino.
“A significant day, which also provided an opportunity to proudly celebrate 50 years of cooperation between Trentino and South Tyrol,” explained Provincial Councillor for Tourism Roberto Failoni. “Back then, the decision was made to join forces by connecting ski slopes and facilities – today, we can present ourselves to the world with high quality and first-class services. We have seen firsthand the strong commitment of local businesses to play an active role: the province is, as always, present, but in this case, too, the role of local businesses is crucial.”
The cable car sector in Trentino records around 100 million journeys per year, generating revenues of over €300 million – a doubling in the last decade. The Latemar Dolomites ski area thus confirms its position as the largest in the Val di Fiemme-Obereggen region, with access from Predazzo, Pampeago, and Obereggen, as well as over 50 kilometers of slopes, further strengthening the region's appeal to tourists.
“This is a particularly important piece of infrastructure, as it connects Pampeago with the practice areas and mountain huts, and is also of great importance for non-skiers and ski schools,” emphasized Pietro De Godenz, President of Nordic Ski Val di Fiemme. “Great attention has also been paid to accessibility – with a fully barrier-free facility – as well as safety along the route, which crosses a heavily frequented area.”
