2026 Austrian National Ski Championships Conclude

The 2026 Austrian National Ski Championships concluded today under the spring sun at Reiteralm, marking a celebratory end to the domestic racing season. While the World Cup circuit often hogs the spotlight, this week belonged to established stars like Marco Schwarz and rising talents like Natalie Falch, who proved that the future of the "Wunderteam" is in capable hands.

Slalom: A Day of First-Time Champions

The final day of competition focused on the technical discipline of slalom, where difficult, soft-snow conditions tested the field’s grit.

Men’s Slalom: Christoph Meißl delivered the performance of his career to secure his first-ever national title. Meißl fended off a fierce challenge from Joshua Sturm, who had to settle for silver by a narrow margin of 0.19 seconds. Adrian Pertl rounded out the podium with a bronze.

Women’s Slalom: The women’s crown went to Natalie Falch. Although the race was technically won by Croatia’s Leona Popovic, Falch was the highest-placed Austrian, earning her the gold medal. Falch described the win as a "massive boost for next season," finishing ahead of Kathrin Stock and Julia Flatscher.

Technical Double: Marco Schwarz Dominates

The weekend was a masterclass for Marco Schwarz, who seems to have fully recovered his form and confidence. Schwarz secured a "technical double," asserting his dominance across both Giant Slalom and Super-G.

Giant Slalom Highlights

In Saturday’s Giant Slalom, Joshua Sturm held a slim lead after the first run, but Schwarz’s experience showed in the final descent. "The level today was incredibly high," Schwarz noted after his win. "It’s a cool way to wrap up the year."

Speed Events: Ortlieb Reigns Supreme

Earlier in the week, the speed specialists took to the slopes, and Nina Ortlieb left no doubt about her status as Austria's speed queen. Ortlieb pulled off a stunning sweep, taking home the gold in both the Downhill and the Super-G.

The Comeback Kid: After battling injuries over the last few seasons, Ortlieb’s double-gold performance at Reiteralm suggests she is ready to challenge for the World Cup speed globes in 2027.

Men’s Speed: While Schwarz took the Super-G title, the Downhill gold went to Stefan Traninger, who mastered the high-speed sections to claim a hard-fought victory.

Final Medal Table (Gold)

"These championships are about more than just medals; they're about the transition of energy from the veterans to the youth," said an ÖSV (Austrian Ski Federation) official during the closing ceremony.

With the 2026 championships in the books, the athletes now head into a short break before summer training begins. If this week was any indication, the battle for a spot on the 2027 World Championship team is going to be exceptionally tight.
