Cable Car Funding From The Bavarian Ministry Of Economic Affairs Is A Success

The cable car funding from the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs is a success. This was the result of a study by the tourism experts from dwif-Consulting. Economics Minister Hubert Aiwanger: “An attractive, modern infrastructure significantly enhances the Bavarian tourism regions. With the cable car promotion, we are strengthening year-round tourism and are thus investing in the future of the regions. We secure jobs in rural areas all year round and strengthen the local economy.”

The cable car promotion has had the following effects:

  • Necessary investments for technical modernization and to increase the energy efficiency of the plants could be realized, which would never have been possible without the subsidy.
  • Access for families and people with restricted mobility has been improved in many ways.
  • More people can be transported, waiting times have been reduced.
  • The replacement of tow lifts by chairlifts or gondola lifts made summer use possible in many places.
  • The improved range of cable cars has significantly increased guest satisfaction.
  • The image of the respective holiday destination and of Bavaria as a tourist location has gained new radiance.
  • This image improvement has a positive effect on Bavaria as a business location: jobs have been created or secured, working conditions have been improved, further investments in the region have been initiated. In this way, rural areas are strengthened and the emigration of skilled workers is prevented.

Aiwanger: “The funding has a positive effect in the regions, because cable cars are magnets for the tourism industry. They attract guests - and where there are many visitors, the choice and quality of accommodation and gastronomy also increase. New shops and service companies such as ski and bike rentals are also settling there.”

Since 2009, the Free State has been funding the modernization of existing cable cars with up to 35 percent of the investment sum. At that time there was a considerable investment backlog at the railways, which has since been gradually reduced with the help of the support. The aim of the funding is to create a better future option for the regions and to strengthen year-round use. Therefore, only gondolas and chairlifts are funded.

Funding of 91.1 million euros has now been approved for 46 projects via the cable car directive, with an eligible investment sum of 323.5 million euros. The present study takes into account the already completed projects with 49 million euros in funding, which have triggered investments of 199 million euros.
